Barracks of the Royal Guard

The Danish Royal Guards

Have been protecting the Danish regents, both in Copenhagen and other cities, for more than 350 years, since the regiments creation during the Dano-Swedish War in 1657 – 1658 as the King Frederik III’s personal regiment of bodyguards.

Originally the Royal Danish Guards they were quartered on an other set of barracks just a few hundred meters away on Sølvgade, but when the King Christian V was not using his vacation home on Gothersgade in Copenhagen next to Rosenborg any more, the Royal Danish Guard assigned an Architect with the remodeling and building of the orangeries and vacation home into at the time modern barracks. The outcome of that, is not far from what we see today.

Amalienborg Palace

Was part of a whole new district that was constructed in Copenhagen, and that we today know as Frederiksstad from Kongens Nytorv (King’s New Square) to Kastellet. This new district was designed and built to celebrate the House of Oldenburg’s 300 year anniversary of their monarchy, during a total of 400 on the Danish throne. The work went on for 10 years, from 1750 – 1760, and the facades were almost identical with their 2½ stories and majestic look in rococo style building. Originally built as homes for the four most noble families in Copenhagen at that time, it fell in other hands during the years.
Royal Building Master Nicolai Eigtved was appointed by the King as the Lead Architect, but the Lord Chamberlain, Count Adam Hottlob Moltke was the real driving force behind the buildings, and the originally named ‘Palace of Moltke’ was the first of the four rococo style buildings that were completed.

Rosenborg Castle

was built on behalf of famous Danish King Christian IV in the beginning of the 17th century (early 1600). Christian IV was a driving force and man behind a lot of majestic buildings, of which you can still find the majority all over Copenhagen today.

At first Rosenborg Castle was built as a summer house for the King – outside the embankments and ramparts that once defended Copenhagen from attackers. The building then underwent a series of remodels, the latest in 1624, and it became the fine masterpiece of a castle we see today, which was used as the regents summer house until 1710. Here it is situated nicely just next to Kongens Have (King’s Garden) where it was possible for the regents to take a walk and ‘get away’ from the daily decision making.
